Untold Tales Returns!

Untold Tales, the Marina’s playwritting festival for young writers is returning for its second year!

Since January, pupils from schools in Lowestoft and Great Yarmouth have been working with storyteller and Shakespeare teacher Simon Bridge whose work as an educator notably includes the Globe Theatre in London, and East Anglian playwright James McDermott whose Norfolk-based play Rubber Ring is currently being developed for TV, to create their very own short plays.

“We wanted to create a project that gave young people a chance to express themselves creatively and share their ideas with a wider audience. We received over 151 submissions, and every single script is packed with energy and ambition.  18 of these scripts are now with a professional cast and will be staged at the Marina Theatre on the 2nd July.  The 5-strong cast are taking on over 90 speaking roles, and it’s sure to be hugely entertaining spectacle.  There’s something very powerful about seeing your words come to life and we hope the young writers and audience members both are inspired.” – Will Isgrove, Head of Young People and Outreach.

The project, part of Making Waves Together, has seen the school children learn about characters, settings, dialogue, problems and their resolutions before being challenged to come up with their own unique and dramatic stories.

Amy Wylie, the director of Untold Tales said: ‘I think the most exciting thing about the project is that we present a completely unfiltered view of a child’s imagination, it’s like a slightly wired dream.’ As you can tell, the presentation of these plays next week is going to be a fun and entertaining celebration of the imagination of young writers.

You can support this fantastic evening of young talent on Tuesday 2nd July at 7pm. Book your seats here.

London Premiere Today for Suffolk Film Yesterday

Today sees the London premier of Yesterday – the much anticipated Danny Boyle film firmly rooted in Suffolk. The picturesque views of the Suffolk and Norfolk Coast will be experienced around the world thanks to this latest film from writer Richard Curtis, and today the stars are out for the film’s London Premiere in Leicester Square.

“Yesterday, everyone knew The Beatles. Today, only Jack remembers their songs. He’s about to become a very big deal.”

From Academy Award®-winning director Danny Boyle (Slumdog Millionaire, Trainspotting, 28 Days Later) and Oscar®-nominated screenwriter Richard Curtis, (Four Weddings and a Funeral, Love Actually and Notting Hill) comes a rock-n-roll comedy about music, dreams, friendship, and the long and winding road that leads to the love of your life.

The musical comedy features an all-star cast, including Framlingham’s own Ed Sheeran, and was filmed across the Eastern region in 2018, with crews in Halesworth, Gorleston and even Clacton-On-Sea in Essex. Featuring some well-known local spots including Gorelston Beach, James Paget Hospital and Ormiston Denes Academy, the film also saw some of our Marina family take to the big screen.

Fay Bishop a Marina Theatre Steward enjoyed her time as an extra on the iconic beach scene (pictured). The scene shot on Gorleston beach had over 5,000 extras singing along to some of the Beatles greatest hits, with the production supported locally by the county’s official film office Screen Suffolk.

One of our volunteers, Paul Webster even managed to land himself a small speaking part in this summer blockbuster which also stars Lilly James (Mamma Mia 2 Here We Go Again, Downton Abbey) and Himesh Patel (BBC’s Eastenders) who leads the cast as Jack Malik – a struggling songwriter who finds fame recreating the now forgotten hits of The Fab Four.

Come and see Yesterday on the Marina Big Screen from the 29th July – 2nd August. Book ahead to beat the queues.

ANONYMOUS DONOR SAVES THE DAY FOR DEAR ZOO!

ANONYMOUS DONOR SAVES THE DAY FOR DEAR ZOO!

BACK IN THEATRES THIS AUTUMN FOLLOWING THEFT OF TOUR BUS!

An anonymous donor has come to the rescue of the Dear Zoo live on stage! touring production.   The hit children’s show which saw the final leg of its Spring tour cancelled at the end of April due to the theft of its heavily branded tour bus (pictured) and its contents, will be back in UK theatres from 4 September.

Show producers, Norwell Lapley Productions, are thrilled to announce that the autumn tour will now go ahead and where possible the cancelled shows have been rebooked.   Thousands of families with young children were disappointed on 27 April 2019 when the Dear Zoo live on stage!  tour was brought to an abrupt halt following the theft of the tour bus and its contents in Peterborough.  Despite a nationwide search by the Police and producers of the show, the tour bus and its contents have still not been recovered which has meant a total rebuild of the production at great cost.

With its future in jeopardy, the combination of insurance and the generosity of one individual, has enabled the company to cover most of the financial losses incurred as a result of the theft.   A new set is currently being built and Dear Zoo live on stage! will be delighting audiences once again this autumn.

Discussing the Dear Zoo situation, Chris Davis of Norwell Lapley Productions said “we are really delighted that we are now able to go ahead and put Dear Zoo out on the road again thanks to a very generous anonymous donation.    Support for the show has been amazing and the sympathetic response from the public has been quite overwhelming.    We had confirmed some tour dates for the autumn, but they were in doubt as we were not sure if we would be able to cover costs following the disastrous theft of the Dear Zoo live on stage! tour bus.”

Dear zoo will be at the Marina Wednesday 16th October 1.30pm and Thursday 17th October 11am & 2pm. To book you tickets, click here.
