We are looking to add to our team of volunteers for our Alternative Lowestoft event on Saturday 20th July. We’re looking for HELPERS and FLASHMOB volunteers.

Volunteering for Alternative Lowestoft is an opportunity to meet new people, support Lowestoft’s developing art scene and encourage people to view our lovely seaside town in a completely new light.

We’re looking for people to HELPERS to help with:

• Craft activities
• Setting up a mini beach in the town centre
• Running activities
• Assisting professional actors during a performance

(Helper volunteers would need to be available 11am – 3pm and/or 2pm – 6pm on 20th July)

We’re also looking for FLASHMOB volunteers to:

• Be part of our Alternative Lowestoft performance alongside a team of professional actors

(Flashmob volunteers would need to be available 6pm – 8pm on Tuesday 16th July and 5:30pm – 8pm on 19th July, and available for at least 2 out of 4 performances on 20th July – 1pm, 2pm, 3pm, 4pm)

Alternative Lowestoft is brought to you by the Marina Theatre as part of the Making Waves Together project – a wider partnership between Great Yarmouth Borough Council and Waveney District Council.

We are looking to cast 3 actors, 2 female and 1 male for an outdoor promenade performance in the centre of Lowestoft on 20th July.

Saturday 20th July (Performance Day)

Untold Tales, the Marina’s playwritting festival for young writers is returning for its second year!

Since January, pupils from schools in Lowestoft and Great Yarmouth have been working with storyteller and Shakespeare teacher Simon Bridge whose work as an educator notably includes the Globe Theatre in London, and East Anglian playwright James McDermott whose Norfolk-based play Rubber Ring is currently being developed for TV, to create their very own short plays.   

“We wanted to create a project that gave young people a chance to express themselves creatively and share their ideas with a wider audience. We received over 151 submissions, and every single script is packed with energy and ambition.  18 of these scripts are now with a professional cast and will be staged at the Marina Theatre on the 2^nd July.  The 5-strong cast are taking on over 90 speaking roles, and it’s sure to be hugely entertaining spectacle.  There’s something very powerful about seeing your words come to life and we hope the young writers and audience members both are inspired.” – Will Isgrove, Head of Young People and Outreach.

The project, part of Making Waves Together, has seen the school children learn about characters, settings, dialogue, problems and their resolutions before being challenged to come up with their own unique and dramatic stories. 

Amy Wylie, the director of Untold Tales said: ‘I think the most exciting thing about the project is that we present a completely unfiltered view of a child’s imagination, it’s like a slightly wired dream.’ As you can tell, the presentation of these plays next week is going to be a fun and entertaining celebration of the imagination of young writers.

Charlotte McGuinness, a steward of the Marina Theatre, will be performing Burst, a collection of monologues from men and women who’ve frequented Lowestoft seafront throughout the last 150 years. Written by Charlotte and produced by HighTide Theatre Company, these stories paint a vivid portrait of local characters. Catch the performance at 4.45pm on Saturday 22^nd June on the Green Stage in Kensington Gardens

Our talented Marina Friends John Hales and Agnes Lillis will also be taking part in the festival. John directed the hit community production of Oliver last year in association with the Seagull Theatre, and Agnes is a regular member of Lowestoft’s Creative Forum which is held at the Marina Theatre.
