How many world-famous wrestlers do you know that come from Norwich? No, we’re not pulling your leg, there is one – and this forms the basis of outrageous new comedy-drama Fighting With My Family. Dwayne Johnson produces and Stephen Merchant directs the true story of Norwich wrestler Saraya-Jade Bevis, who experienced a brief yet impactful career as WWE wrestler Paige before retiring earlier this year. Hailing from a family of professional wrestlers, who established and continue to run the World Association of Wrestling promotion, Paige went on to enjoy success in American rings.
This includes her historic victory as the youngest ever holder of the Divas Championship at the age of 21.
Paige’s story is now brought to the screen by the unlikely duo of Johnson (who became aware of the family while filming Fast & Furious in the UK) and Merchant, who makes his feature film directorial debut.
In the starring role is the terrifically talented Florence Pugh, who recently stunned in dark period drama Lady Macbeth. Support comes from Dunkirk’s Jack Lowden as Paige’s brother Zak aka Zodiac, Nick Frost as her father Patrick aka Rowdy Ricky Knight and Lena Headey as mother Julia aka Sweet Saraya.
Vince Vaughn plays wrestling coach Hutch, the man responsible for bringing Paige to the States, and Dwayne Johnson himself makes a cameo, which, if the trailer is anything to go by, looks brilliantly self-effacing and hilarious.
